Dayton's mission statement is to promote a thriving community while preserving their rural roots and connecting to its natural resources. It is located 20 minutes from Minneapolis at the confluence of the Mississippi River to the north and the Crow River to the west. The earliest settler was Paul Godine, a native of France. He established a trading post with the Native Americans in 1851. It was considered the choicest spot in the entire territory of Minnesota and platted in 1855. The early settlers came primarily from France, with Irish, Scottish, and German immigrants also making this area their home. The city was named after Lyman Dayton, a wealthy capitalist from St. Paul. Of his accomplishments, bringing the railroad to Minnesota was uppermost. He was president of the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroads until 1865. These railroads became part of the Burlington North Railway. Dayton is a developing community of approximately 6,000 residents, many of whom are young families with children. Recreational opportunities abound within the Elm Creek Park Reserve. The park has 4,000 acres suited for hiking, horseback riding, cross country skiing, biking, picnicking, swimming, and snowmobiling. Dayton is a beautiful community having rolling hills, green pastures, and beautiful vistas overlooking the mighty Mississippi and Crow Rivers.
